Common Questions

It takes a deep commitment to change and an even deeper commitment to grow. — Ralph Waldo Ellison

What is Therapy:
Therapy is a form of treatment that people seek to address a wide range of concerns. It is also known as psychotherapy or talk therapy and involves talking about one's thoughts, feelings, and challenges with a trained therapist who uses research-based interventions to support change and growth. There are many different approaches to therapy. Please see the following link from the American Psychological Association for more information about psychotherapy and the different approaches.

What does therapy with Dr. Jessica Haskins look like?

Dr. Haskins believes therapy is most effective when individuals are able to reflect on their own behaviors and focus on areas that they would like to grow and/or change. Therapy with Dr. Haskins is often an active process, with the intention that clients initiate topics for further exploration and engage in meaningful work both during session and between appointments. Dr. Haskins draws from a variety of psychological approaches guided by the concerns being addressed and her clinical assessment of what would be most beneficial to each client. These approaches may include, but are not limited to, positive psychology, solution-focused, emotion-focused, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Dr. Haskins also incorporates psychodynamic and trauma-informed interventions into her work.

Difference between psychologists and psychiatrists:

In simplified terms, psychologists hold a doctorate degree in psychology (PhD or PsyD), have completed pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training, and are licensed to practice in the state(s) in which they work. Psychologists primarily provide psychotherapy and psychological assessments, and, with very limited exceptions in certain states and with additional training, do not prescribe medication. In California, psychologists do not prescribe medication. Psychiatrists, on the other hand, are medical doctors (MD or DO) who have completed medical school and a residency. They are licensed physicians who are able to prescribe medication, in addition to psychiatric evaluation and treatment.

How long is a therapy session and how often do I attend?

A typical therapy session lasts 45-50 minutes. Dr. Haskins generally recommends attending therapy weekly or bi-weekly, depending on the concern you wish to address. As progress is made, sessions can transition to every three weeks or monthly for “maintenance” sessions until treatment is concluded.
